OWSD Palestine national chapter in cooperation with the Palestine Academy of Science and Technology, held an online seminar using Zoom entitled " Epigenetics and public health." On 14, October 2020.
Dr. Alia kiwan a research scientist and project leader in the Division Endocrinology at the University Hospital of Heidelberg discussed the main of Epigenetics science as an essential mechanism in human health and disease. The dialogue was moderated by Dr. Amira Shaheen, OWSD-Palestine Chair and Dr. Areej Khatib, the member of OWSD Palestine National Chapter Executive Committee.
The lecture focused on Epigenetics as an essential mechanism in human health and disease. The speaker has explained the epigenome mechanisms, including; DNA methylation, histones modification, and microRNAs. The talk also covered the most current knowledge of epigenetic events in nature models and highlighted their preclinical and clinical impact in multiple diseases, including Covid-19. Moreover, it has surveyed some research results and conceptual understanding of epigenetic signaling's fundamental mechanisms, especially related to the regulation of gene expression programs.
In the end, the speaker has indicated that many genes, diseases, and environmental factors are part of the epigenetics picture. However, the evidence is still accumulated to form a basis for any overarching theories about which elements and target genes are most likely to mediate the adverse effects of the environment on diseases.
