PGSB Steering Committee Meeting – Postdoc Stipends within the PGSB PGSB Alumni Returners Program Returners Program

Palestine Academy for Science and Technology (PALAST) hosted virtual meeting via Videoconference with the PGSB Steering Committee on Monday 27 July 2020. The meeting was opened by Dr. Rana Samara, member of the PGSB Advisory Committee at PALAST, who welcomed the Steering Committee, and Dr. Ahmed Othman, representative and on behalf of Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for attending the meeting. 
Followed by speech from Prof. Ghaleb Natour, who identified the following points  

  • Extention of the PGSB Program
  • Update on the 5th cooperation workshop
  • Research cluster 
  • Postdoc Stipends within the Returners Program of the PGSB

Prof. Natour emphasized, post the approval from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for extending the PGSB until mid 2024 with another 3.2 Million Euro in support for the development of the scientific cooperation between Palestine and Germany. Such support included exchanged visits, joint workshops and scholarships for BSc, MSc. and PhD students, in addition to the two new concepts; research cluster and Postdoc.

Prof. Natour introduced the research clusters concept to the PGSB steering committee for discussion and planning assistance, and how this concept fits in at the universities, and possibilities of opening the research clusters to include other partners.
Then he presented plans for a returner’s program (PostDoc positions), for ideas and feedback from Palestinian Universities, and mentioned that 10 PostDoc positions will be available for two years each.

The main goal of PostDoc concept, is absorbing PGSB alumni from Palestinian Universities, who are expected to return to Palestine to establish their own research groups in science and technology and/or contribute to the development of new PhD programs, creating the nucleus of a Palestinian science and technology infrastructure.

At the end of the meeting, PALAST and Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research agreed on to establish an integrated national vision to be submitted to the the Palestinian University Presidents council, to facilitate the process of absorbing Returning students program for promoting scientific research at Palestinian universities.
