The dean of the science faculty, Dr. Wafaa Khater, in collaboration with OWSD-Palestine National Chapter, organized an interactive meeting with Dr. Kate Shaw via zoom on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, February 11th, 2022. The meeting attracted a wide audience of researchers, faculty members, master level students and high school teachers.
Dr. Shaw touched upon various activities of particle physics and ATLAS experiment outreach that she and her team carried out in Birzeit University over the past decade, focusing on the role of Palestinian Women in Physics.
She also presented the opportunities that the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Italy offers to students and researchers from developing societies, such as the pre-Phd Diploma program and the Physics Without Frontiers (PWF) project which she is coordinating.
The audience participated actively in the meeting with comments and questions on the opportunities and requirements to get involved in research and PhD programs in physics and mathematics, since this year of 2022 was declared by the UNESCO as the international year of basic sciences for sustainable development.
Dr. Shaw who is currently a faculty member at Sussex university, volunteered to teach in the master of physics program in Birzeit university in 2013.She was awarded the European Physical Society's (EPS) 2015 Outreach Prize of the Society's High Energy and Particle Physics Division.
