The Researchist in partnership with OWSD Palestine National Chapter and Palestine Academy for Science & Technology (PALAST) organized Palestinian Women in Science event within Women's Day 2023, Sponsored by the General Consulate of Spain in Jerusalem. It was held on Saturday 18th March 2023 at Palestine Red Crescent Society, that aims to Highlight the challenges faced by Palestinian women in science.
Several leaders and Palestinian women scientists participated to share their stories, challenges, and tips to overcome them. The event began with Dr. Duha Shellah, CEO of the Scientific Research Community of Palestine The Researchist , who welcomed the attendance and highlighted the importance of celebrating women in science in Palestine, and Vice-Consul of Spain, Mr. Ignacio Sánchez, who emphasized on the importance of scientific cooperation between Spain and Palestine, and Dr. Amirah Shaheen, Chair of the OWSD-Palestine National Chapter, spoke about the vision of the Platform and the Palestine Academy and their work to support and give opportunities for women in science.
The event was started with the note speakers, Dr. Safa Nasser Al-Din - Secretary General of the Presidium of the University of Jerusalem, who shared many tips for the younger generation from her extensive experiences in technology and leadership, and Dr. Wafaa Khater, Professor of Physics, Dean of the Faculty of Science at Birzeit University, and in the executive Committee in OWSD-Palestine National Chapter, who talked about the importance of the presence of Palestinian women in physics.
Followed by a panel session , where the panelists shared their stories and how they chose to insist on achieving their dreams. As Dr. Suhair Lulus Hamameh, Dr. Thabat Al-Khatib, Dr. Mariam Fasfous and Ms. Abeer Quneibi discussed the challenges facing Palestinian women on their way to study or work in science, the importance of balancing between personal life and work, and how to deal with financial difficulties and lack of opportunities.
Followed by TED Talk with Dr. Dalal Erekat, who spoke about the diplomacy of science and its importance, and Dr. Haneen Dwaib, who shared her story and how she accomplished many achievements and won international awards for her research, and Dr. Suhair Lulus Hamameh, who talked about her interaction with Palestinian women during her research on breast cancer inheritance.
The event also contained research posters for students from grades 10 and 11, bachelor's and master's degree students from various scientific disciplines, and Palestinian universities.
