The first meeting of the Advisory Board of Medical and Health Sciences division which was established at the beginning of this year, was held at the Palestine Academy for Science and Technology premises in Ramallah. The division will work in accordance with the vision, mission, and goals of the IAP, as one of the goals of the academy is to promote and develop scientific research and innovation in Palestine, develop knowledge and find solutions to the challenges facing the Palestinian people. The focus will be on important issues related to health in Palestine. The Advisory Board Members are nominated from most Palestinian universities, which will enable them to call on expertise across all disciplines - including health and medicine.
The establishment of Medical and Health Sciences division comes as a recommendation from IAP and after the participation of Dr. Duha Shellah, who was nominated by the Academy, in the Young Physician Leaders Program under the age of 40, to provide them with the skills necessary to promote health and strengthen health systems globally, and so enhancing the expertise of leaders in science with the aim of improving policies and public health and spreading excellence in science education. The program was held in Germany, organized by the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), in which Dr. Shellah represented Palestine at the World Health Summit (WHS) under the title "Effective Leaders for Effective Health Systems" and specifically "Women and Health Care" and in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO).
The meeting started with a welcoming speech from Palestine Academy for Science and Technology, followed by a speech from the InterAcademy Partnership from IAP Coordinator, Dr. Peter McGrath, who appreciated the step of establishing the division and promoting medical and health sciences in Palestine.
